Wear a wide-brimmed hat, a shirt with long sleeves and sunglasses whenever you leave the house. If you plan to sit outside and enjoy the day, find a spot with lots of trees and big overhanging branches or an umbrella. It should go without saying, but we’ll say it anyway. Wear sunscreen and reapply it every two hours.

Don’t forget to protect your lips

Your lips and sun damage

Lips are constantly exposed to the sun’s rays. Unprotected lips have little melanin, the pigment in the skin that helps to screen out the sun’s damaging rays. The outer layer of the lip is very thin, so there is little to protection from the sun.ID-100111612-150x150

When lips gets sunburned, significant and long lasting damage may occur. The level of collagen in lips can be reduced, which is what gives them plumpness and stops the formation of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.

In addition to aging the lips, prolonged sun exposure can result in a condition called “actinic cheilitis’, a pre-cancerous state, also referred to as ‘farmer’s lip’ or ‘sailor’s lip’. This results in persistent dryness and cracking of the lips. Pre-cancerous lesions may also form, along with severe wrinkling. Every year many new cases of skin cancer of the lip are diagnosed.

Fall & winter skin care

botoxiconIn the shower

If you’re getting out of the shower, and the mirror is steamed up, you may be drying out your skin. To avoid stripping oil from the skin on your face and body so you’re left with dry, flaky skin, turn down the heat a bit.

Pat yourself dry

Instead of rubbing yourself, pat dry gently with a soft towel. This is especially important for sensitive facial skin, but be kind to the rest of your body as well when drying off.

Drink lots of H2O

Drinking water is good for your entire body. It will help to keep you hydrated both inside and out, and can aid in clearing up acne.

Triggers that age skin

What triggers aging skin?

There are two types of aging skin—intrinsic and extrinsic. Here’s what this means and what you can do to address them.

Intrinsic Aging

This is the type of aging which occurs naturally in your body over time. Your genes will influence how fast you age, which is why some people stay more youthful looking than others, even though they are the same age chronologically. Some will get droopy eyelids while others don’t, some get neck bands while others develop jowls. ID-10037678-150x150Some people never seem to age at all, while others look much older than they actually are.

Not much can be done about your genetic predisposition to aging, with the exception of being proactive and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Extrinsic Aging

Extrinsic aging refers to external triggers which lead to aging. Fortunately, we have much more control over how much we allow ourselves to be exposed to these:

  • sun damage
  • emotional and physical stresses
  • pollution
  • oxidative stress and inflammation

Get rid of sun damage with an IPL treatmentID-100139474

If you spent any time out in the sun this past summer, you’ve likely incurred some sun damage—freckles, changes to skin texture and red and brown discolouration.

Exposure to the sun results in sun spots and broken capillaries, making skin look older. IPL treatments promotes a more even and bright skin tone.

How does IPL work?

IPL or Intense Pulse Light focuses on sun damage, small veins and fine lines using light to target pigment. It is often called a Photofacial treatment. IPL or Photofacial treatments safely and effectively effectively treat sun damage, age and brown spots, freckles, rosacea, and wrinkles.

How many treatments are needed?

Typically 3-4 treatments are needed, but there is little downtime. There may be some slight redness immediately after the procedure. Some tiny brown or pigment spots may appear on the surface of the skin within a day or two of the treatment, and these usually disappear usually within 3-4 days.
