How does laser tattoo removal work and why is the PicoSure so different from the Q-Switch?

Laser tattoo removal works by using the laser beam to shatter the ink molecules into very tiny pieces, so that your body’s natural lymphatic system can wash them away. Until the launch of PicoSure a few years ago, Q-Switched lasers had formerly been considered the gold standard for removing tattoos for the past 20 years.

The older, Q-switch laser treatments use thermal energy (heat) to heat up and break apart the ink particles. This is effective, however the chances of scarring is much higher as the heat causes damage to the surrounding tissue during the course of treatments.

As many more treatments are required, the scar tissue continually builds up and makes it increasingly harder for the laser to reach its ink targets. The average number of treatments required with Q-switch is upwards of 12, (many tattoos require 15-20 treatments) while the average number of treatments required with PicoSure is 5-9.

With PicoSure, the laser pulses hit the ink particle with a 1,000 times more pressure than Q-switch, so the ink shatters into extremely tiny, dust-like particles. Because the particles are so small, they are much more readily absorbed and dismissd by the body. The PicoSure laser also uses photo mechanical pulses rather than photo thermal (less heat) which rarely causes scar tissue to form.

All of this means better clearance of the tattoo and (on average) several less treatments overall!

How much time is needed between treatments and what is the recovery like?

Most clinics will treat tattoos every 4-6 weeks. At Vantage, we treat tattoos every 8-12 weeks, which actually means better results and more money saved by our clients! Because your body is doing all of the work via the lymphatic system to clear the broken up ink molecules, it needs quite a bit of time to wash away the treated ink. If the tattoo is re-treated too early, much of the laser’s energy is used up on the ink that hasn’t yet been cleared, resulting in a partially wasted treatment.

It is advised to avoid contact sports, vigorous exercise or any other activity that could cause bruising or sweating (contains bacteria) for 1-3 days post treatment. As well do not go swimming or use saunas/hot tubs/whirlpools. The treated area will feel like a mild-moderate sunburn for a day or 2 following treatment and may feel hot, tight and tingly. You may experience some mild blistering following the treatments, which is completely normal. Proper care of the treated area involves keeping it clean, dry and bandaged (if blistered) until the surface of the skin is healed.

If you are going to be in the sun during the course of laser treatments, the area should be covered with clothing and/or high mineral SPF sunscreen to prevent damage and dispigmentation (lightening or darkening of the skin). Please keep our technicians advised of all sun exposure.

How much does Laser Tattoo Removal cost?

We customize tattoo removal pricing for each tattoo, based on the size and the density of the ink coverage.
