One day you look in the mirror and see something you haven’t noticed before! The appearance of fine lines or wrinkles around your eyes, on your forehead and beside your nose and mouth. Many of the reasons behind facial aging and fine lines are due to environmental causes. Our skin is constantly bombarded by the elements. Calgary’s climate is extremely dry and we have many days of sunshine, as well as cold weather and wind and pollution, which are powerful factors in skin aging. The long-term effects are fine wrinkles, age spots, sagging skin, freckles and leathery skin.
As we age, our skin also shows the results of our lifestyles exposure to cigarette smoke, alcohol and our diets. Cigarette smoke dries out the skin and alcohol dilates the small blood vessels causing restricted blood flow. Alcohol may cause blood vessels in the face to break, creating that flushed look of a chronic drinker. Stress and loss of sleep and lack of Vitamin C can also cause premature aging, resulting in fine wrinkles beginning to appear.
Genes and DNA play a part in how well we age. Some of us are blessed with genes that produce enough collagen for a longer period of time. Eventually, time catches up and wrinkles begin to show up.
